Prof Dr Maliah Sulaiman

Prof Dr Maliah Sulaiman is an adjunct Professor in Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences International Islamic University Malaysia, Honorary Professor in Faculty of Business and Accounting University Selangor, Advisor in Salihin Academy and a Fellow for the Centre for Islamic Economics, International Islamic University.

Prof Maliah dedicated her professional life in accountancy and audit since 1980. For her contributions to the field, she has been awarded numerous accolades at international and national level.

She holds a PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand as well as a fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK). 

Forty (40) years of experience as an academic and an auditor at a public accountants firm. She’s involved in auditing of statutory bodies, financial institutions, investment holding company and a transportation company. She taught financial accounting, cost accounting, management Accounting for Islamic Banks, Accounting, Auditing and Governance of Islamic Financial Institutions at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels..

She has significant experience working with people with diverse background and culture whilst teaching at Otago University, New Zealand and the International Islamic University Malaysia. She gained invaluable experience as a Visiting Research Fellow at the School of Accounting, Curtin University of Technology, Australia as well as a Visiting Professor at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, Curtin University of Technology and Universiti Muhammadiyyah, Indonesia.

At the international level, a recipient of four prestigious awards, the JSPS (Japan Society for the promotion of Sciences) fellowship in 2003 and the ACU (Association of Commonwealth Universities) fellowship in 2005. In 2016, was awarded the Mevlana Exchange program to Turkey and in 2019 and 2020, voted the 300 Most Influential Women in Islamic Business and Finance Award (Ranked 81).

Recipient of the prestigious Article of Merit Award (2007) by the International Federation of Accountants, New York. In 2009, was awarded a Gold Medal by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, Article of Merit Award. In 2013, was awarded a Bronze medal by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants for the article entitled “Corporate Governance Practices of Islamic Financial Institutions in Malaysia”. Most recently, in 2015, was awarded a Silver medal by the Malaysian Institute of Accountants for the article on “Greening Corporate Governance and the Boards”.

Three prestigious appointments at the international and national levels. Was appointed as an expert panel member of the ISO 14051, ISO 14052 and d 14053 standards on Material Flow Cost Accounting by ISO (International Standards Organization based in Geneva) since 2014 till to date. Was appointed by the Minister of Finance, Malaysia to sit on the Board of the Malaysian Accounting Standards for 6 years from 2013 to 2019 (a maximum of two terms). Appointed by the Minister of Finance, Malaysia to be a Council member of the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) from 2013 to 2019.

Other notable appointments include being a Member of the Task Force on Environmental and CSR Reporting of the Confederation of Asian and Pacific Accountants (CAPA) (2008), member of the National (Malaysia) Committee on Material Flow Cost Accounting, Standard Industrial Research Institute Malaysia (SIRIM), task force member of Material Flow Cost Accounting, Malaysian Productivity Centre and chaired the Examinations Committee as well as the Islamic Finance Committee of MIA (2018). Yet another notable appointment was being the Dean of the Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences for 3 years from January 2015 to December 2018.

Pertinent current contributions at the national level include the research and development of financial reporting standards for Baitulmal, Zakat and Wakaf with the Accountant General’s office as well as the review of accounting programs in Malaysia.
